Imagine two pieces of iron being smashed together
to create the final sharpened product. In the process,
there’s a lot of friction involved… and a lot of
change that must take place before reaching the perfect end result.
Similarly, real intimacy with friends can sometimes
be uncomfortable and challenging but the final product can be
beautiful if we hang in there and risk being known.
If you’ve seen the movie The Breakfast
Club, you have seen “iron sharpening iron” in
relationships.
There are 5 of students who had to spend a day
in Saturday detention together. There was a brain, a criminal,
a princess, a jock and a basket case.
They started out hating one another for their
differences. But after a day of “iron sharpening
iron” with definitely a lot of friction, the group found
that they weren’t all too different from one another.
Their conflicts, proximity, courage and eventually
humility made them stronger and more beautiful than what they
could be on their own.
In the end, they realized they all had similar
characteristics. In reality, they were all brains, they
were all criminals, they were all princesses, they were all jocks
and they were all basket cases.
Sometimes it’s easier, more convenient
and more comfortable to keep people at a distance or try to always
have harmony. However, life is much richer when we enter
into deep friendship where we challenge and are challenged!
And we are better because of it! We’re
stronger and we’re more beautiful.
So be sure to value those around you and take
time to know and be known!
